A two-day design sprint workshop took at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka (https://www.facebook.com/makerspacelarnaka/) on Friday and Saturday, 12-13 October. During the workshop, participants discussed, explored, proposed solutions and developed prototypes (applications, systems, etc.) with a goal of providing useful information for responsible gaming, as well as information for the risks posed by non-responsible participation. The prototypes developed by the teams followed the theme of the Responsible Gaming campaign (http://responsiblegaming.gov.cy/en/) as part of the Responsible Gaming Awarness Week (http://responsiblegamingweek.gov.cy/) of the National Betting Authority: 1. Learn before you play 2. Set limits 3. Self-evaluation 4. Be brave when addressing the problem 5. It’s a game, do not forget it The interactive workshop was hosted by Prof. Panayiotis Zaphiris and Andreas Papallas from the Cyprus Interaction Lab. INTERACT 2019 (http://www.interact2019.org/) is the latest of a series of conferences on Human-Computer Interaction organized under the aegis of the Technical Committee 13 of the UNESCO International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP). The IFIP TC 13 aims at developing the science and technology of the interaction between humans and computing devices. The first INTERACT conference was organized in London, UK in 1984 and the most recent conferences took place in India (2017), Germany (2015), South Africa (2013) and Portugal (2011). INTERACT 2019 runs in-cooperation with the ACM Special Interest Group on Human-Computer Interaction (SIGCHI). The Research Centre on Interactive Media, Smart System and Emerging Technologies [ RISE ] (http://RISE.org.cy) with additional support from members of the Cyprus Interaction Lab had a strong presence at Βραδιά του Ερευνητή / Researchers’ Night with the participation of more than 15 academics, researchers and administration officers affiliated with RISE and collaborating research labs. As per annual tradition, the Research Promotion Foundation (http://www.research.org.cy/) has organized successfully the Researchers’ Night, which took place on September 28th and 29th 2018, at the Carob mills, at Limassol. The Researchers’ Night is a Europe-wide celebration for research and takes place in more than 300 European cities in 36 countries. On August 31st 2018, the Cyprus Interaction Lab (https://www.cyprusinteractionlab.com) of the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology, in collaboration with the Research centre on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging Technologies (http://www.rise.org.cy) and the MakerSpace Larnaka of the Youth Board of Cyprus (https://www.facebook.com/makerspacelarnaka/), have organized and delivered an innovative workshop for childrenentitled: “Exploring Gender Identity and Micro:bit using E-textiles”. The workshop took place at the MakerSpace Larnaka of the Youth Board of Cyprus and hosted 24 children.  From 9th-18th July 2018,  the Cyprus Interaction Lab of the Cyprus University of Technology  (CIL, https://www.cyprusinteractionlab.com) and the Research center on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies (RISE, http://rise.org.cy) delivered two innovative educational workshops in the context of the annual summer school of the Cyprus University of Technology for 5-15 years-old children. The educational activities were developed and implemented by researchers of the CIL and RISE, under the supervision of Dr. Andri Ioannou, Assistant Professor: Yiannis Georgiou (Post-doctoral Researcher, RISE, CIL), Panayiotis Kosmas (PhD Candidate, CIL), Anna Magidou (Master Student, CIL). Το Cyprus Interaction Lab (https://www.cyprusinteractionlab.com/), το Youth Makerspace Larnaka (https://www.facebook.com/makerspacelarnaka/) και το Research Centre on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging Technologies of Nicosia συνδιοργάνωνουν το βιωματικό εργαστήριο “Κατασκευές με τεχνολογία Micro:bit και ηλεκτρονικά υφάσματα” για παιδιά ηλικίας 11-14 ετών. Το βιωματικό εργαστήριο θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Παρασκευή, 31 Αυγούστου 2018, στους χώρους του Youth Makerspace Larnaka, από τις 09:00-14:00. Το βιωματικό εργαστήριο είναι συνδεδεμένο με ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα, το οποίο διεξάγεται από τις Δρ Άντρη Ιωάννου (Cyprus Interaction Lab, ΤΕΠΑΚ), Δρ Jennifer Rode (Ινστιτούτο Εκπαίδευσης του UCL) και Δρ Louise Barkhuus (Πανεπιστήμιο της Κοπεγχάγης). In July 2018, the MAKERSPACE project managed by the Cyprus Interaction Lab for the Youth Board of Cyprus, hosted the Annual Summer School of the Cyprus Architects Association. The Summer School involved the design, prototyping and construction of a 1:1 pavilion that was installed in the yard of the building. The participants utilised most of the equipment and facilities at MAKERSPACE including visualising their design in VR, prototyping and brainstorming. The outcome of their two- week workshop was presented to the municipality and the youth board in an event in August and will remain on site open to the public. The workshop was supported by the Research center on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies (RISE, http://rise.org.cy).

The European ENGINITE project invites the submission of applications of interest by graduate engineers and industries/companies/organizations to participate in a postgraduate Vocational Education and Training (VET) programme, which will be held during 2018-2019. The postgraduate VET programme will be based on Problem Based Learning (PBL) pedagogy and will combine advanced applied academic topics with hands-on aspects, in order to endorse the knowledge and skills of graduate engineers, preparing them for the industry of the 21 st century. Via a PBL approach to training, the ENGINITE postgraduate VET programme will contribute to the development of career and employability skills of the new engineers – among others: innovation, entrepreneurial skills, efficient quality, health and safety management, problem solving, communication and presentation skills – while it will also enhance their technical knowledge in critical fields of engineering. During June of  2018, the Migrant Information Center provided free Greek Language Courses for third-country nationals. Two classes were offered, and up to 25 people participated. All students had the opportunity to learn fundamental grammatical rules, and words, that will facilitate their further integration into the Limassol social context.

Το πρώτο Youth Makerspace στη Λάρνακα ανοίγει τις πόρτες του στους νέους δίνοντας πρόσβαση σε υψηλού επιπέδου και τελευταίας τεχνολογίας εξοπλισμό για την ανάπτυξη πρωτοτύπων και υλοποίηση των επιχειρηματικών τους ιδεών. Το Youth Makerspace παρέχει επίσης την ευκαιρία στους νέους να παρακολουθήσουν δωρεάν εργαστήρια, διαλέξεις και παρουσιάσεις που έχουν διάφορα θέματα τεχνολογίας για συζήτηση, ενημέρωση και εκπαίδευση. Το Youth Makerspace Larnaka απευθύνεται σε παιδιά και νέους ηλικίας 6 – 35 χρόνων καθώς και σε οργανωμένα σύνολα νέων, τάξεις ή ομίλους εκπαιδευτικών ιδρυμάτων και σχολείων και άλλους. Το τρίτο θερινό σχολείο ηγεσίας νέων του οργανισμού νεολαίας  ολοκληρώθηκε με πλήρης επιτυχία. Το Youth Leadership Summer School αφορούσε τους νέους/νέες φοιτητές/τριες ή και απόφοιτους Πανεπιστημίου από 18 μέχρι 30 χρονών που πιστεύουν στη δύναμη της θέλησης και στην αξία της προσπάθειας για ένα καλύτερο κόσμο. Στα πλαίσια του Youth Leadership Summer School, οι νέοι είχαν την ευκαιρία να έρθουν σε επαφή με καινοτόμες τεχνικές και εργαλεία ανάπτυξης καινοτόμων προϊόντων, υπηρεσιών και διαδικασιών. Καθώς επίσης είχαν την δυνατότητα για δημιουργικές συναντήσεις μεταξύ νέων ανθρώπων, για συνεργασία και κοινή ανάληψη δράσεων. Εκπαιδευτές του θερινού σχολείου ήταν ο καθηγητής Παναγιώτης Ζαφείρης και Αντρέας Παπαλλάς. Οι νέοι κλήθηκαν να δώσουν προτάσεις θετικής αλλαγής σε πραγματικά προβλήματα και προκλήσεις της περιοχής Πλατρών και ορεινής Τροόδους, τις οποίες παρουσίασαν στους ιδίους τους κατοίκους, οι οποίοι θα αποφασίσουν για την περαιτέρω αξιοποίηση και υλοποίηση τους.  

Το Τεχνολογικό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου και το Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης προσκαλούν την υποβολή δηλώσεων ενδιαφέροντος από αποφοίτους/νέους μηχανικούς και εταιρείες/βιομηχανικές μονάδες/οργανισμούς για συμμετοχή σε πρόγραμμα επαγγελματικής εκπαίδευσης και κατάρτισης, στο πλαίσιο του ευρωπαϊκού έργου ENGINITE. Το πρόγραμμα επαγγελματικής εκπαίδευσης και κατάρτισης θα υλοποιηθεί από τον Οκτώβριο 2018 έως τον Μάιο 2019 και θα περιλαμβάνει 2 διακριτές φάσεις: Τρίμηνη εκπαίδευση μέσω συμμετοχής σε 8 εβδομαδιαία μαθήματα (Οκτώβριος-Δεκέμβριος 2018) Τρίμηνη πρακτική άσκηση σε εταιρείες/βιομηχανικές μονάδες/οργανισμούς (Ιανουάριος-Απρίλιος 2019) Το εν λόγω πρόγραμμα επαγγελματικής εκπαίδευσης και κατάρτισης στηρίζεται στην προβληματικο-κεντρική μάθηση (Problem-based Learning). Συνδυάζει εφαρμοσμένα ακαδημαϊκά θέματα με πρακτικές πτυχές, προκειμένου να συμβάλει στην ανάπτυξη των τεχνικών γνώσεων σε κρίσιμους τομείς της μηχανικής καθώς επίσης και των δεξιοτήτων των νέων μηχανικών (μεταξύ άλλων: καινοτομία και δημιουργικότητα, ομαδικότητα, επιχειρηματικές δεξιότητες, διαχείριση ασφάλειας και υγείας, διαχείριση έργων). Στις 17/6 το Κέντρο μας στη Λεμεσό, το οποίο διευθύνει το Cyprus Interaction Lab, παρευρέθηκε στην Πλατεία Ηρώων, όπου έλαβε χώρα η εκδήλωση «Μουσικά Αποτυπώματα», στο πλαίσιο της παγκόσμιας μέρας του πρόσφυγα. Στην εκδήλωση εκπροσώπησαν το Κέντρο, ο διοικητικός υπεύθυνος Παναγιώτης Χατζηκωστής μαζί με τους κοινωνικούς συμβούλους Θράσο Τηλεμάχου και Έμιλυ Κουζαρίδη. Οι δράσεις μας στην παρούσα εκδήλωση αφορούσαν την πλήρη ενημέρωση των παρευρισκόμενων για τις υπηρεσίες που προσφέρουμε, όπως και στοχευμένη παροχή ενημέρωσης σε άτομα και ομάδες που αποτελούν τη γενικότερη γκάμα ομάδας στόχου μας. Τέλος, ο Παναγιώτης Χατζηκωστής παραχώρησε συνέντευξη στον ραδιοφωνικό σταθμό ΠΡΩΤΟ.   

The ENGINITE 3rd projectmeeting  took place on June 11-14, 2018 at the Technical University of Crete, in Chania. As part of the project meeting the ENGINITE partners had the opportunity to review all pending issues, with a highlight on important milestones to be completed before the interim report. Particular emphasis was given on the finalization of the ENGINITE online training platform as well as on the recruitment of young engineers and companies. The highlight of this project meeting was however the ‘Train the Trainers’ workshop which was held during the last three days of the meeting and was marked as highly successful.    

On Saturday, 2nd of June 2018, the public event “Children play… and LEARN” was organized with great success by the Kindergarten Association of Lympia. as was attended by dozens of kindergarten and primary school children. As part of the event the Cyprus Interaction Lab of the Cyprus University of Technology (CIL, https://www.cyprusinteractionlab.com) and the Research center on Interactive media, Smart systems and Emerging technologies (RISE, http://rise.org.cy) co-organized the educational kiosk “Can your program the robots, to accomplish their missions?”. The children who visited our kiosk had the opportunity to take part in various playful educational activities.
