The proposal submitted with the acronym EDUBOTS – Best practices of pedagogical chatbots in higher education – has been qualified under the Erasmus+ program (Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices – Knowledge Alliances) with a total funding of 713,578 euros.
Chatbots have the potential of tackling challenges, such as the difficulty of educators to do course evaluations in a formative manner or to promote communication and collaboration amongst the students.
Even though chatbots appear in several applications in the last decade, their implementation in higher education is still in its infancy. The main reason is the lack of knowledge in how to implement and train the chatbots for specific scenarios in higher education. The project aims to document best practices for the use of chatbots in higher education.
Current state of the art will be defined and pilot studies with pedagogical chatbots will be implemented in the partner universities. Digital learning communities (cMOOCs) will be set up for knowledge sharing among educators, so as to motivate the implementation of pedagogical chatbots for improving the quality of education in Europe.
The project started on November 1st, 2019, with a duration of 24 months. The RISE Research Centre of Excellence in Cyprus is a partner in EDUBOTS (members of the Cyprus Interaction Lab involved). The project is coordinated by EdTech Foundry in Norway. The EDUBOTS project also includes five additional partners, as follows: Anna & Hubert Labs, University of Leeds, University of Zagreb, University of Granada, and Riga Technical University.
